Northern Lights Over Lone Rock, Lake Powell

The Story Behind The Shot

I think one of the things I enjoy the most about photography is the chance to be in the right place at the right time and purely by luck witness something truly amazing and rare.

Dani and I found ourselves in Page AZ (Lake Powell) looking to capture some panoramic images for some more mural commissions and heard that there was a chance of seeing some northern lights down in the southern states. The night the nation was buzzing about it we had a healthy dose of overcast clouds in northern Arizona and couldn't see anything. The next day we wondered if there would be any residual solar flare activity and decided to roll the dice on Lone Rock (west part of Lake Powell across the border in southern Utah).

The universe was on our side as we made our way to the Lone Rock beach as Dani started noticing some faint but distinct glowing in the sky to the north. I snapped a shot with my camera and was astonished to see so much pink in the sky in the image my camera just took! As we positioned ourselves closer to the shoreline, the color and brightness intensified and we were blown away at what happened over the next 15-20 minutes.

The moon was out that night, about 20% crescent, which doesn't seem like much, but out where we were, we could actually legitimately see our own shadows cast from the moon! It's this moon light that was just strong enough to illuminate Lone Rock but not harsh enough to wash out the stars and aurora.

I believe that this one a once in a life time image. I am feeling truly blessed to have been in the right place at the right time with the moon, aurora, and so close to such an iconic subject while on a trip where this wasn't on the radar to begin with. I hope you enjoy this, the word is truly a beautiful place!

Metal Prints

Metal Prints represent a new art medium for preserving photos by infusing dyes directly into specially coated aluminum sheets. Because the image is infused into the surface and not on it, your fine-art print will take on an almost magical luminescence. The ultra-hard scratch-resistant surface is waterproof/weatherproof and can be cleaned easily - just avoid direct sunlight.
